Rashad Alakbarov Paints with Shadows and Light

This is kind of flying all over the internet right now, but I couldn’t resist sharing. ArtistRashad Alakbarov from Azerbaijan uses suspended translucent objects and other found materials to create light and shadow paintings on walls. The jaw-dropping light painting above, made with an array of colored airplanes is currently on view at the Fly to Bakuexhibition at De Pury Gallery in London through January 29th. Light Stencils in Vietnam

This past September photographer Wittner Fabrice (previously) had the opportunity to visit Vietnam where he managed to execute a number of his unique light stencils in various locations around the country. Keep in mind these are not digital, but rather long-exposure photos created with lights shone through large cut stencils. Though I really enjoyed Wittner’s previous light paintings commemorating the Christchurch earthquake, the picturesque backdrops of Vietnam as well as a clear improvement in technique make these even more special. Lighting the Way

 sometimes you can decorate a room around just one really extraordinary lighting fixture. a beautiful vintage fixture like this one from cafe no hut can literally light up a room, giving you one particularly swell source of inspiration — and then you just take off from there. that one truly unique and special fixture is all you need to make a room smashing, all on its own. here’s a few i’m inspired by.

An Interactive Cloud Made of 6,000 Light Bulbs

CLOUD is a large scale interactive installation by artist Caitlind r.c. Brown that appeared September 15th as part of Nuit Blanche Calgary in Alberta, Canada. The piece is made from 1,000 working lightbulbs on pullchains and an additional 5,000 made from donated burnt out lights donated by the public. Visitors to the installation could pull the chains causing the cloud to sort of shimmer and flicker, I can’t tell you how much I would have enjoyed seeing this up close or at least on video. 100,000 LED lights float down the Sumida River

As part of the recent Tokyo Hotaru Festival, 100,000 illuminated blue LEDs were released in the Sumida River. The massive installation of solar-powered spheres was meant to mimic a swarm of fireflies that twisted and bobbed along the river by moonlight. For those of you worried about pollution or safety, the lights were later caught downstream by giant nets.
